And here we are in full Hi-Nrg paradise, Astaire was one of the main bands for Passion , probably together with Record Shack, one of the major hi-nrg labels in UK. They were known mostly for tracks like "Love Trap" and "Fire Me Up", this is less known and was never released as a single in its own, was a special free bonus record for one of their collections, and like most songs of this style has got that "Show Tune Feeling", but is a feel-good uplifting dance number and in our opinion deserves to be remember...Now, where did I put my little yellow bottle???

Back from our holiday in one piece or almost, and with winter at the door I decided to satisfy a request and play a "solar" track, in my opinion one of the happiest tune of that period, Amazulu were a band leaded by the singer Annie Ruddock with reggae and Caribbean influences, this was probably the most popular of their singles, this version of the 12" was a nice remix that add a simple drumbeat to the original and was part of a collectibles double pack that included a mediocre megamix made by Dakeyne of DMC fame, hope that this bring some heat in our cold days ahead!!!!

Sharon Redd is one of those artists that doesn't really need major introductions, since her early steps of her career as backing singer for Bette Midler she always delivered astonishing vocals and some of her tracks from "Can You Handle It?" to "Beat The Street" will take a high position in the history of dance music. This is the last single she recorded, after the "Love How You Feel" album, produced by Eric Matthew she went back to Darryl Payne (The author of "Never Give You Up" from the previous album "Redd Hott") and released "Second To None" on Payne's own label, with its arrangements between electro and freestyle lacks a bit the beautiful production of Prelude Records but the voice is still magnificent, and after her death in 1992, is probably the best musical inheritance she could have left.

When in 1983, Lynn Goldsmith (extremely popular female music photographer) decided to release a dance album inspired to the "dub" atmospheres popular in the stylish musical circles in N.Y. thanks to artist like Sly & Robbie, based on "optimistic messages", it raised more than one eyebrow. But Goldsmith was a very clever girl and surrounded her with a lot of great musicians: Robert Palmer and Sting for the first single "Adventures in Success", Carly Simon for "Kissing With Confidence" and finally with Nile Rodgers for "Smile". I remember hearing this on the last New Year's Eve of The Sound Factory in N.Y. just before the final closure, Junior Vasquez dropped it as one of the "morning tracks" and me and my dancefloor mates were saying "Is this New or Old? (Junior always had the ability to play dance stuff from 20 years before and reworking them to make them sound like freshly squeezed tunes)", "Is this the most beautiful song? (and even before you think it, NO! Chemicals had nothing to do with that! You Bitches!)" The little we knew that this amazing voice was an American one AND British produced!! Jeanie Tracy started to write her name in the history of Dance Music since her Two Tons o'Fun days with Sylvester, this was the European phase of her career, produced by Band Of Gypsies and remixed by Fire Island (Farley and Heller) at the top of their success. This is in my opinion a beautiful track, Nick Straker Band were a British band that reach major success in USA thanks to track like "A Little Bit of Jazz" and "Straight Ahead" and "A Walk In The Park", this last one has been remixed several times during the years. This Is taken from the Album they recorded for Prelude in 1980, I never knew why never released as a single (or for that matters not even in their greatest hits collection) cause for me it has all the elements to be a hit, great arrangement with a great sequenced piano, amazing saxophone solos and beautiful lyrics:

This belongs to a period where the Europeans were excellent in producing Dance music that was different from the classic Euro/Italo stuff and from the American one. The producers are Fluitsma & Van Tijn, gifted dutch duo responsible for all the hits by Mai Tai (Do you remember "History"???), "Mutual Attraction" by Sylvester and "Dance Around The World" by Richenel (all the producers have some LOW moments!!!!). "Save me" is beautifully arranged and has got a bass that kick ass. I remember making it listen to a friend that told me "God, they stole the chords of the vocal verse from Corona's "Rhythm Of The Night", they sound exactly the same!" He was right, (in part) the basic difference is that this was made in 1987 and the Corona's one in 1993, so, obviously was the latest that was copied by "Save me"!!!!!!

Another one of those "mysterious" White labels, this is a extremely well produced cover of "Walking In The Rain" by Flash and The Pan and brought to success by Grace Jones in 1981, the (handwritten) sticker on the record credit this to Sara Carlson,

a dancer/actress from the end of the eighties, so being this record released at the same time, it make me believe that is correct, but like with all the white labels, you can never be totally sure.

Another element that make the track pretty "unique" is the possibility to be played at different speed, at 45rpm is a house track with high pitched voice, at 33, is a moody downbeat tune with

low tone vocals that declaim the wonderful transfixing lyrics, and that's the way we propose it to you!

Another example of a very tasty downtempo disco thing, she become famous thanks to "Superstar", where she was singing on top of the instrumental of "Billie Jean", never been too keen on that, this second single was a better story, among the additional producers there is Tony Bongiovi (yes, is the uncle of Jon!!!!) and he's responsible for a lot of Gloria Gaynor and Meco hits. Once again the vocals (like in the case of "Superstar") are a bit dubious, but the arrangement of strings and horns is pretty catchy, as much that it was sampled by Dope On Plastic for their "Stand By Me" in 2002. I remember that in 1985 during a night in the infamous London club Heaven, the great Ian Levine, at the time uncontested resident DJ, near the end of the night in the middle of his High Energy selection dropped this bomb, percussive, a killer sub bassline and with very low mysterious and hunting semi-talked vocals that keep repeating "Again....again...again" during the verses and explode in an instrumental strings played chorus. The crowd (and ME!!!) was absolutely mesmerized. The track is produced by a Frenchman called Jean-Jacques Souplet , popular artistic director, responsible amongst the other things for the Afro orientated track "Sultana" by Titanic.
